Coda

Coda’s journey started in 2014 with an observation: Why haven’t documents and spreadsheets changed in over 40 years? Coda is a new kind of doc that brings words, data, and teams together. It comes with a set of building blocks that anyone can combine to create a doc as powerful as an app. Our co-founders, Shishir Mehrotra and Alex DeNeui, are veteran entrepreneurs who have held leadership roles at YouTube, Google, and Microsoft.

Shishir spent 6 years at Google; first as Director of Product for Youtube Monetisation and then moving to VP of Engineering, Product and UX. Prior to Coda, Alex spent four years at Google where, among other projects, he helped launch Google Drive.

Enabling the next generation of makers

We’re a diverse crew of makers, brought together by our shared love of big ideas and the promise of a new creative platform. We have three offices–Mountain View, San Francisco, and Bellevue, but we stay in touch over Zoom and Slack, and visit each other often. We love our product and use it in all areas of our work and lives. We’re a startup, but we’re more like a ‘grown up’ startup. We roll out around 5pm and fill our time outside of work with our families and passions.

For instance, our educator Maria is an actor, and we recently went to go see her star as Lady Macbeth. Sohan is a light artist. And we have an office band. 

Every year, we’ve taken everyone and their families on a vacation. The Coda family offsite is one of our favorite company traditions!

Three Things Coda Believes

  • “Everyone’s a maker:” Coda thinks people are more capable and interested in making their own software than they realize. By making apps as accessible as docs, anyone can build their own tools.

 

  • “Right versus familiar:” The world trends toward the familiar, and gets stuck in product ruts for far too long. At Coda, employees take their time to choose right over familiar—knowing of course that familiar is sometimes right.

 

  • “We build building blocks:” Atomic, recombinable building blocks make simple things easy and complex things possible. The Coda philosophy is to minimize nouns and always think modular.
